This first heart transplant procedure at a central government-run hospital in New Delhi is historic and successful.
According to the release, a team of cardiac surgeons from RML hospital and AIIMS led by Dr. Narendra Singh Jhajhria arrived at PGI Chandigarh the same evening and harvested the donor heart, which was then quickly flown to New Delhi via a green corridor arranged by PGIMER, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Chandigarh police departments Airlines Manager of Alliance Air.
Dr. Vijay Grover Head, CTVS, and his team, which included Drs. Milind Hote, Narender Jhajharia, Palash Aiyer, and cardiac anesthetists under the direction of Drs. Ramesh Kashev and Jaswinder Kohli performed the procedure. The procedure began at 9 pm on August 21, 2022, and was finished at 3 am on August 22, 2022. Following surgery, the patient was sent in a stable condition to the CTVS ICU. The patient has been taken off the ventilator and is recuperating.
Dr. Nandini Duggal, Director and MS of RML Hospitals, said in a statement to the media agency, “It’s a big achievement, and it is a history indeed, that has been created by RML doctors here. It was a very difficult task, but thanks to our dedicated teams and a great team effort and departments of CTVS cardiology, blood bank, Nodal officers for transplant, our transplant coordinator, and many other services from Chandigarh, Delhi airport authorities, and AIIMS.
Dr. Vijay Grover, a different physician on the team, said: “Performed the longest operation on this 32-year-old woman after she had been in pain for 7-8 years, which is now considered normal. She was first diagnosed with narrated cardiomyopathy when she was a little kid. A 15-year-old vehicle accident victim who gave up her body parts as an organ donor helped save six lives.”
The seamless coordination of numerous departments, including the blood bank team led by Dr. Kiran Choudhary and the hospital’s transplant coordinators, led by Dr. H. S. Mahapatra, under the general direction of Dr. Nandini Duggal, Director and Medical Superintendent, ABVIMS, Dr. R. M. L. Hospital, made this herculean undertaking possible. More successful heart transplants are urgently needed in our nation’s public health service institutions so that many socioeconomically disadvantaged people from remote places can be benefited. The initial step in this endeavor has been performed by the ABVIMS, RML Hospital, overseen by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
