Monsoons bring a much-needed break from the scorching summer heat, but they also bring their own set of skincare challenges. Increased humidity, fluctuating temperatures, and pollutants can wreak havoc on our skin. Following a well-structured skincare routine is essential to maintaining healthy, glowing skin during the rainy season.

Six-step skincare routine for the monsoon:

Cleanse thoroughly: Double cleansing is the foundation of any effective skincare routine, especially during the monsoon. The humidity causes the skin to produce excess oil, which can mix with dirt and pollutants, leading to clogged pores and breakouts. Double cleansing entails using an oil-based cleanser first and then a water-based cleanser.

  • Oil-based cleanser: Oil-based cleanser dissolves makeup, sunscreen, and excess sebum. Massage the cleanser onto dry skin well and rinse with lukewarm water. This step ensures that all oil-based impurities are removed.

  • Water-based cleanser: Then, apply a gentle water-based cleanser to eliminate any remaining dirt and sweat. One must choose a cleanser that suits their skin type, ensuring it is free from harsh chemicals that damage the skin.

Tone up to balance: Toning is an often overlooked step but is vital during the monsoon. A good toner can help balance our skin’s pH, tighten pores, and remove residual impurities. Look for alcohol-free toners with ingredients like witch hazel, rose water, or green tea. These ingredients are known for their soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. Apply the toner gently using a cotton pad or gently patting it onto your skin.

Exfoliating face mask: Exfoliation is crucial for removing dead skin cells and unclogging pores, but over-exfoliating can irritate your skin, especially in humid conditions. To maintain a balance:

  • Opt for an exfoliating face mask once or twice weekly.

  • Apply an exfoliating face mask containing gentle exfoliants like fruit enzymes or fine granules.

  • Leave it on for the recommended time and rinse off with lukewarm water.

This will remove the dead skin cells and improve the quality of the skin.

Vitamin C serum: Vitamin C serum is generally a powerhouse in any skincare routine, and its benefits are especially valuable during the monsoon season. It helps reduce pigmentation, brighten the skin, and protect against environmental damage. After toning, one must apply a few drops of vitamin C serum to the face and neck, allowing it to absorb completely. Vitamin C provides antioxidant protection and boosts collagen production, keeping your skin firm and youthful.

Hydrate with a lightweight moisturizer: The increased humidity during the monsoon can make our skin feel greasy, but skipping moisturizer is not an option. Instead, switch to a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer that hydrates without clogging your pores. Opt for gel-based or water-based moisturizers that absorb quickly and provide long-lasting hydration. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, and glycerine are excellent for keeping skin hydrated without making it oily.

Protect with sunscreen: UV rays can penetrate and damage our skin, even on cloudy and rainy days. Wearing sunscreen is non-negotiable, regardless of the weather. One must choose a sunscreen with at least SPF 50. Look for lightweight, non-greasy, and water-resistant formulas to ensure they stay effective despite the humidity. Apply sunscreen generously on face, neck, and any other exposed areas 20 minutes before stepping out.
